~Dry, Itchy Skin~

With the cold weather, and dry heat, my skin is starting to turn to leather...any remedies out there? We've had our heat on for the past two months now (well, off and on during September), and the dry heat is just really getting to my skin. Even my eyelids itch!!!

I'm going to plug in my humidifier and see if that helps matters. Any remedies for me?

Definitely a humidifier and make sure you're drinking enough water. You know, I've tried all sorts of things for my daughter and I. We both have sensitive skin/alleries/ecezma that gets worse in winter. The *best* thing I've found so far is just plain old Vaseline. I even use a small amount on my face lately because it was peeling so badly. It locks in moisture amazingly well and doesn't give me acne (I can't use most expensive face creams). And it's cheap!

Amy said what I would say. Humidifier + water + some sort of cream..My MIL is a great believer in a dab of vaseline.
Hope this works for you.

In April of last year, I switched my family to the all natural Melaleuca products, and we have enjoyed wonderful skin! Melaleuca has a lotion called "Renew", and it beat "Eucerin" in a "blind test." It will zap dry skin in no time. It even cured my crocodile skin thighs that I got every winter! :-)The other great thing is that it is not greasy! When my friend told me about it, I thought she was stretching a little until I gave it a shot. It is the most incredible lotion on earth!

Guess I'm not the only one to suggest vaseline. :O) If you rub it in while your skin is slightly damp it seems to absorb quicker.

Hi Tammy,

We have a whole house humidifier (pretty easy to install; they run about $100) and that helps A LOT, especially if your sinuses get too dry normally. Also, I just got a new lotion last week, Curell. It works great, very soothing. I've used it in the past but don't remember it being so soothing and mositurizing.

My hubby has very dry skin. When he lived in Alaska, he poured on Baby Oil when coming out of the shower -- we've started using olive oil that way this year (seems to be working). I would also agree with the humidifier -- makes a big difference.

[And I'm going to try that "Renew" w/ Melaleuca on my family - Thanks Martha!]

Thanks for all the comments and tips!

Martha--do Melaleuca products have to be purchased through a dealer, or are they available in stores?

I plugged my humidifier in last night, but it doesn't seem to be working.

When you dry off, pat yourself instead of rubbing. Rubbing removes lipids, which is what keeps our skin soft. And use a body cream instead of lotion. That increases lipids.

People swear by coconut oil for the skin...I haven't yet tried it myself. I have heard that petroleum based products can leech some of the minerals out of your skin, so be careful! When I try the coconut oil, I'll review the results.

Tammy, I just saw the question you asked me, so I will email you with the answer. It will keep me from posting a long comment.

I was having the same problem and bought some Jergens Ultra Healing lotion. It is helping a lot. My skin was actually hurting like a sunburn before I started using it.
