~Two Finished Projects~

Both are scarfs:

Purple with "pom-poms". Very easy knit, just back and forth! I got the yarn from the Dollar Tree, so it cost me $2.

Up close:

This next picture was taken when the scarf was still on the needles. I promise you, it's finished, but I couldn't get a decent picture of it, and I didn't want to drag out all the stuff for my light box. It's hard to take pictures of dark objects! I chose this picture because it showed the cable the best.

I got the pattern from this from a book called One Skein. I borrowed the book from the library a while back. This was my first project using cables, and I enjoyed it making it very much. It is very long and skinny, and I wasn't sure how I would like it. However, I think it's very cute. *Smile*

Tammy,
I have a desire to learn how to knit. Could you give me suggestions for how to get started? I googled "knitting for beginners", but that really didn't tell me what I needed to buy, etc.

Those both look great! I love the little "pom poms".

Mrs. C, I've written about starting out here and a follow up post here.

My suggestion is to go to the library and find some good books. If you are a self-taught learner, this is a great way to begin. If you feel more comfortable with someone showing you how, many yarn shops have classes. My local yarn shop offers beginners classes for a very reasonable price. Or, ask around in your church. You might be surprised who knows how to knit! Once you know how to cast on and knit, you can get your practice in with scarves or dishclothes. If you have any other questions, please ask. I'll try my best to answer!

Thanks, Amy! I like the pom poms too! =)

Tammy,
You have played an inspirational role in our family on the subject of knitting. I recently went to Wal-mart and found tons of yarn on sale for $1 a skein. I bought the most beautiful rusty suede yarn and Lindsay is crocheting me a shawl out of it for church. I can't wait to tell her about this book, I know she'll want to check it out. My 13 yo is knitting things for her dolls...using toothpicks. When we switch our blogs, we're going to start hers and I'll have her post pictures.

Knitting with toothpicks? WOW that's dedication!!! :)

Those are beautiful! It feels so good when a project turns out! Someday I must pick up the knitting needs again. :)

i've tried knitting, but find it hard, being a leftie, making it work for me. my hands just don't seem to coordinate with knitting. i can crochet and did last year for christmas presents, but i tense up and get so sore. do you find ways to keep from tensing up, and getting sore. my hands hurt so badly and cramp up.

I would love to learn how to knit. My Grandma tried teaching me 40 yrs ago when I was a young thing & I couldn't make heads or tails of it. She did teach me how to crochet back then & an Aunt of mine taught me too back then & I figured it out. I'm not so good at crocheting tho. Everything seems to be too tight & then curls up or curves. Can't figure out how to keep that from happening. Right now I am in the midst of crocheting a pillow cover for a pillow in the living room & a tote bag. We'll see if they ever get finished lol. You seem to be really good at crocheting & knitting... :)

Shari, when I am learning a new stitch, or learning something new, I do tend to tense up. However, I find knitting and crocheting very relaxing for me. I sit back, and enjoy the work. I tense up more if I'm doing something like counted cross stitch, where I have to concentrate harder.

The cable knit is vy. nice looking! Once I graduate from washcloths I will have to give it a try.
