~This 'n That~

~If you have bagged spinach, don't eat it. There has been one death, and at least 20 cases of people ill with e-coli. See this article for further details. A few weeks ago, I had heard of several people who had gotten e-coli from bagged salad mixes, so I've been avoiding them since then. The convenience isn't worth getting sick (or dying!).

~I'm making ketchup tonight. I got quite a few tomatoes out of my garden, and wanted to make up a batch of ketchup. In my mind, I was going to cook the tomatoes, run them through my food strainer, and "voila" have tomato paste come out. Yeah, right. I got tomato juice, of course. It's simmering on the stove right now. *I* am enjoying the smell, but someone else, who happens to live with me, is not enjoying the smell of vinegar, spices, and tomatoes that is wafting through our house. LOL

~I'm interested in the results that are coming in for my little poll. The "don't knows" are currently in the lead. To the "don't knows" out there...you should try some eggplant! =)

~It's "sweater weather" here! It's supposed to warm up over the weekend, and then supposedly the high for Tuesday is 56*. I refuse to believe weather forcasts here in Michigan. They aren't very acurate. When we moved here, people told us, "If you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes." That's been true on some days!

~I made chili for dinner tonight. Yum! I love soups and chili on a cool day. It's the perfect meal for fall and winter!

~I'm working on yet another new project. :D It's a cabled scarf, perfect to learn how to do cables on. Cables always looked extremely hard to me, so I was pleasantly surprised to find out how easy they are. The scarf is very skinny, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. I told Kevin that it's a "California" scarf--a decoration, not something to keep warm with. I really like the way its turning out though, so I will finish it.

~Have a good day!

Hmmm . . . eggplant. I've only had it fried (I'm from the South, remember, where we fry everything), and it was pretty good when I tried it. Oh wait! When we were on deputation, we someone served us BAKED eggplant. I will try most anything, and when we were on deputation, I did try lots of things just to be polite. But this eggplant . . . it was horrible! Very slimy. So I didn't like that. LOL

I think I'm with Kevin on the smell of ketchup!

Oh, I love eggplant! Mom plucked three from her garden this afternoon and we came straight to my house and peeled them and sliced them length-wise, then sprinkled them liberally with salt and placed them in a colander over a bowl to weep the bitterness out. Then I rinsed them well and dried them off before cooking them in a just a bit of oil until they were tender, then sprinkled a bit of freshly ground pepper and sea salt over them, along with a bit of lemon juice. Even DH who doesn't care for eggplant scarfed it down! Haven't had any that fresh before, but it definately won't be the last time!

Wow... I envy your fall-like weather! My husband's relatives live in Michigan. I was astonished at the cool weather we experienced when we visited in June! It is so mild and lovely there doing North Carolina's hot months.A few days this past week, it has cooled off to the 60's around here. Oh, I am so ready for a lovely fall. I am a big fan of the two more moderate seasons...fall and spring. (Though we don't really get a taste of either of those here.)
Chili sounds so lovely right now. I also love making chili, soups, and homemade bread when it is cold outside. It isn't cool enough for me to make those yet, but I am hoping it will be soon. I made soup a few weeks ago (a really creamy and delicious potato soup) and hubby said, "There is nothing like Hot soup on a Hot day." :) My day is coming though... I just know it.

Thanks for sharing the news on the spinach. We eat it quite often but I haven't bought any in a couple of weeks. Come to think of it, I haven't bought any bagged veggeis lately. I'm glad of that. LOL

Let us know how your ketchup turns out. I am amazed at all the different things bloggers are making this year with their tomatoes. It's really wonderful.

BTW, thanks for the head up on the baggeed spinach. My mom just alerted me to the problem this morning!
