~Hedgie Love~

This past spring, I got the idea to do a little "unit study" with my daughter.

I checked out books from the library:

The book in the upper right hand corner was very informative, but on my daughter's level (but I learned a lot from the book too!). The other books ranged from silly, fun make-believe, counting, telling time, and opposites. We read them over and over during the time we had them.

I knitted up Hedgie (Ravelry link):

and oh.my.goodness. we got to see and pet a live hedgehog:

(the quills aren't as prickly as I thought they would be).

We colored hedgehog coloring sheets.

I thought I was doing this all for my daughter. But it dawned on me recently...I was doing it for me. I am the one who is in love with hedgehogs! :D

I did a little search on Etsy and came up with some hedgehog items geared towards grown-up hedgie lovers. This ring in particular is something I'd love. I think I would be over-the-moon excited if I ever got these letterpress notecards.

What do you think? Do you like (or love ♥) hedgies too???

I love hedgehogs! I'm not sure how our European ones differ from their American cousins, but I do know that their spines are very prickly! Ours also seem darker in colour than the one in your photograph.
They're often referred to here as The Gardener's Friend as they love to eat slugs and snails!

Julie, actually there are no American cousins! But there are 17 species of hedgehogs so the pictured hedgehog is probably different than the ones you have around you. I was surprised to learn that hedgehogs are not native to North America (I learned that in the informational book). Since hedgehogs are common in other countries, but not North America, most of the story books are from other countries, which I thought was fun. :) Thanks for your comment!

Hi Tammy, I LOVE the hedgehog you knitted!! And the notecards are so very cute! When we were in Michigan last fall visiting our grandson, we went to that Christmas store maybe in Frankenmuth? Anyway, it's the famous everything Christmas store, but I can't think of the name of it....and I saw a hedgehog ornament! You would have loved it!

Thank you, Deb. I had fun knitting her. :)

Bronner's is in Frankenmuth. I went there last fall. Crazy store, hmm?

Wow! You and your daughter have learnt a lot about hedgehogs! Thank you for sharing.

Oh! And Tammy, I forgot to ask earlier, how did hedgehogs get to North America? That sounds like a good story in itself!

Julie - so far as I am aware, there aren't hedgehogs in the wild in North America. They have been brought here for pets, but I did read in the Wikipedia article that some states have banned them from being pets (though that doesn't always stop people...). The hedgehog that we saw belonged to a couple who have a menagerie of animals that they show at fairs and schools and such.

I love hedgehogs, too! They also are the mascot of lace makers. Maybe that's why we like them? :)

Becky, that is interesting! I've never heard that.

So adorable! I love hedgies so much! One of the pictures I had a friend paint for our Beatrix Potter themed nursery was Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. I would love to get some little hedgie wall appliques too!
