~A regretted impulse purchase~

An impulse purchase, according to Wikipedia is:
An impulse purchase is an unplanned or otherwise spontaneous purchase. One who tends to make such purchases is referred to as an impulse buyer.

Marketers and retailers tend to exploit these impulses which are tied to the basic need for instant gratification. For example, a shopper in a supermarket might not specifically be shopping for candy. However, candy, gum and mints are prominently displayed at the checkout aisles to trigger impulse buyers to buy what they might not have otherwise considered. Sale items are displayed in much the same fashion.

Impulse buying can also extend to so-called "big ticket" items such as automobiles and home appliances. Automobiles in particular are as much an emotional purchase as a rational one. This in turn leads auto dealers all over the world to market their products in a rapid-fire, almost carnival-like manner designed to appeal to emotion over reason.

I've never bought a car on an impulse. LOL

Last night I went to my gardening class, and on my way out of the store, was faced with a wall of Dutch licorice candy. I love licorice, so I picked out a package, and checked out.

As I drove out of the parking lot, I popped a piece in my mouth. Whoa! That stuff was nasty! I'll try another piece. Even nastier! My mouth was burning, my sinuses were bothering me, and I was anxious to get home so I could get a drink of water. It was THEE nastiest, grossest, yuckiest, most disgusting "candy" I've ever tasted!

Now, maybe some Dutch licorice is good. However, I doubt if I'll ever find out!

LOL, Tammy, my FIL is Dutch and my hubby loves Dutch licorace --- you're right it is NASTY taste stuff. I truly dislike it but love "regular" licorace.

Guess it's an acquired taste but I'd never, ever eat any of it again. :o)

Thanks for the info because you saved me from making the some mistake. I love licorace. When the boys were much younger there was a store that sold licorace ice cream. Funny sight-black ice cream faces.

Mmm...dutch licorice...my favourite! Sounds like you got my most favourite double salted stuff. I think it says "dubble zout"? (not sure if I spelled that correctly) I think it's an acquired taste that is begun at an early age ;)

What Amy said. LOL! The nastier, the better. It's an acquired taste for sure. The Dutch know how to make licorice!

It's called "Drop" in Holland, and we love it! You do have to grow up with it though. I also love to watch first timers eating drop... the "yuk" face is priceless.

God bless!

Actually I don't like licorice, but I did try some Dutch licorice once in Holland and thought 'this stuff is tolerable'. So what have you done with the rest of the licorice?

Congratulation on your Fall Into a Free Blog Makeover! Exciting!

So sorry about the licorice. I like red twizzlers, not sure if that is real licorice but that is about it.

How funny! When I wrote my blog post, I never thought of people *liking* that stuff...from the sounds of your comments, I haven't offended you! LOL Isn't it interesting how everyone has their own likes and dislikes? We are all so unique...every person uniquely created by God...right down to our very taste buds!

Don't worry Tammy, I'm sure nobody was offended, though we were probably all snickering picturing the look on your face when you tasted it for the first time! It really is an acquired taste. I've rarely known an adult who tried it for the first time and liked it, but if you grow up with it, it becomes an addiction. Like my mother said, "the nastier the better." LOL!

Ha ha, I hate that stuff, too!! I married into a HUGE Dutch family who, for whatever reason, are so in love with that stuff. They can't understand why I'm not.
